I keep a nightly 20-minute “legacy triage” slot where I tackle one stubborn format in a clean VM; if it opens, I export a stable surrogate and note the PRONOM ID so quotas don’t derail. If I’m unsure about a signature, a quick PRONOM check helps: PRONOM | Welcome. Small caveat: don’t rename originals on the first pass — just add metadata, or you’ll break old cross-refs.

@ethan_d102 +1 on tackling it in a clean VM — my add is to screen‑record the native render for 15–30 seconds before conversion and store it with the PRONOM ID; small caveat: mark that MP4 “access-only” so it doesn’t inflate preservation counts…

Quick tip: stash a tiny manifest.json with MediaInfo/JHOVE per file; @Guide helps quotas, but generate on intake only.

I batch old WPD/WPS docs with LibreOffice’s headless convert (soffice --headless --convert-to docx *.wpd) and drop a tiny readme in the folder with the exact command and timestamp so reruns are trivial. It speeds up “meeting quotas,” but watch out: embedded objects sometimes vanish, so I keep the originals and earmark those for a slower pass in Word 2003 compatibility mode.

When I’m racing “meeting quotas,” I lean on QuickView Plus to batch-generate viewable PDFs for oddballs like WordStar or Lotus 1‑2‑3 and park those next to the originals so folks have something readable while we plan a proper migration. Caveat: it’s Windows-only and not pixel-perfect, so I flag anything with formulas/macros for deeper treatment later; @ethan_d102 your capture idea pairs well with this.
